Glossary   Print-friendly Version

Alcohol dependence, commonly referred to as alcoholism, is a chronic and potentially fatal disease. It is a disease that affects not only individuals but families, friends, and communities.

When a friend or family member with alcoholism admits his or her problem, he or she can make a choice for wellness and begin the journey to recovery. But few people can go the distance by themselves. Whether you are a family member or friend, your support and encouragement is important as they try to turn their life around.

A good network of involved healthcare professionals, friends, and family can be a powerful foundation for managing the disease of alcoholism and serve as a safety net in times of trouble. Chances are your friend or relative is or will be involved in some form of alcohol treatment that may involve doctors, counselors, medication, and self-help or support groups. Family and friends can be a critical day-to-day part of that network, supporting the individual's choice for wellness and the positive aspects of remaining alcohol-free. They are also usually the first to notice when something is not right.
